Matisse Arrives in Tangier

In 1912, Henri Matisse traveled to Morocco seeking warmth, inspiration, and something unnamed that Parisian winters could no longer give him.
What he found was Tangier — a city layered in color and contrast.

The French master set up his easel near Bab el-Assa, the same ancient gate that today points the way to our restaurant. From that lookout, he studied the curves of the medina, the blue haze of the sea, and the geometry of rooftops fading into the hillside.

Here, Matisse painted “La Porte de la Kasbah” (The Kasbah Gate) — a canvas that captured Tangier’s quiet beauty with simple lines and luminous color.
It wasn’t just a painting of a place — it was a painting of feeling, of atmosphere, of the rhythm of life in a city caught between continents.
